Electrical muscle stimulation (EMS), also known as E-stim, is a chiropractic therapy that uses electrical currents to contract muscles after injury or surgery. It helps treat muscle pain, weakness, soreness, and helps with strength, mobility, flexibility, and long-term pain relief. Electrical stimulation therapy uses electric pulses to block pain signals along the nerves while releasing pain-killing endorphins to relieve pain. EMS is beneficial during the injury rehabilitation process. There are different types of Electrical Stimulation these include Electrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS) and Interferential Current (IFC).
The most common type of electrical stimulation therapy is EMS. EMS helps with acute pain, chronic pain, and post-traumatic or post-surgical pain. Another electrical stimulation therapy is Russian Stimulation. Russian Stimulation can help with strengthen muscles, increase muscle size, improve muscular endurance, and acceleration. Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) can help re-educate the neuromuscular system and retrain and strengthen muscles after an injury. Functional electrical stimulation (FES) and Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) are two other forms of electrical stimulation therapy and both can hep reduce pain.
